Thank you for featuring Elizabeth Cotten. I saw her perform when I was in college in the early 80s. Incredibly memorable. Her guitar style was unique, left-handed and mirror image. I still have her album which you feature here. Thanks again and also for the link to learn more about her life and work with the Seegers.

She was an incredible talent. Was she doing a tour on the college circuit? I'm so happy you enjoyed the article, and I'm always overjoyed to see when someone reading has a personal connection to a genre that's very hypothetical to me just stumbling upon it. Her gift was clearly meant to be, and I'm glad the stars aligned for her to indulge in her passion.

Thank you! Yes, she was on the college circuit while she was in her 80s! I don’t know if she was also playing other venues, but I really lucked out seeing her at my school in Portland, OR. Thanks again for the article.

A subgenre of blues often obscured by strands from the neighboring states, but with its own particular charm. Cotten's "Freight Train" would become a regular feature of the folk music scene in the 1960s.

This seems to me one of the situations in which other versions couldn't best the original simply because of the material's closeness to its author and its poignancy, but I must listen to other renditions to see who comes close!

Old folky here.

Freight Train was in my set list for 40 years, the started producing my own songs.
