SynthStars: the Synthesizer and Music
Ever since the invention of the telharmonium in 1901, which produced sound through electrified telephone receivers, the sounds of synthesized musical instruments have fascinated people. It would take several more decades for these tools to color the musical landscape with vibrant, novel hues, but once personal synthesizers took off, there was no stopping their ascent.
Rolands, Moogs, and Yamahas, oh my—these genre articles act as inquiries into and chronologies of these carefully crafted gizmos and the ways musicians have manipulated every sound imaginable out of them. From chrome synthpop and house genres to the saws, squares, and pulses of more experimental genres like neurohop or flashcore, all of these genres can act as gateway drugs into the endless, ever-expanding synth universe, and engender a deeper appreciation for electronic music.
I’m taking a break for the next few days because I have some early mornings ahead of me (including getting the rest of my wisdom teeth out, and with the loss of my wisdom, I guess a loss of my writing facility too) and need a little bit of rest. Keep listening to cool things and finding gems <3 In the meantime, check out these synth-focused genre articles I wrote last year.
